Fertilizers are critical for agricultural productivity. Balanced fertilization would include both macronutrients (NPK) as well as micronutrients. Imbalanced fertilization is a major impediment in Indian agriculture, with farmers tending to avoid phosphates (P), potash (K) and micronutrients. Imbalanced fertilization reduces crop yields and depletes the soil. Added to this is the problem of very low use-efficiency of phosphates (~30%) and micronutrients (<10%). This is a huge wastage of resources, waste of investment for the farmer and results in his reluctance to use phosphates and excessive use of urea. These water-soluble fertilizers also cause environmental problems such as run-off of phosphates into water-bodies that cause algal bloom. The world has not come up with an answer to this problem of water-soluble phosphates.
For the first time ever, there is a unique technology that will be a game changer in the world of fertilizers. In our invention, the molecule is water-insoluble but has a “smart” feature so that nutrient is released only on-demand by the crop. This is a designer molecule that allows sustained release of nutrients by a plant-root activated mechanism. The fertilizer molecule functions like a nutrient storehouse providing a continuous nutrient supply throughout the crop growth period.
Smart Fertilizers provides significant dosage reduction and yield improvement in an environment-friendly way. Smart Fertilizers have been developed for the the phosphates - Smart Phosphates and micronutrients - Smart Micronutrients (fertilizers for zinc, boron, manganese, etc). Smart Phosphate is a replacement for the water-soluble phosphates (DAP, SSP, etc); Smart Micronutrients can replace the water-soluble micronutrients (zinc sulphate, borax, etc).With the Smart Fertilizers, nutrient release is under the control of the plant itself. This makes it especially beneficial in increasing yields since a plant requires different quantities of nutrients at different stages of its life cycle. Elimination of nutrient losses results in reduction of phosphate dosage to between 1/4th to ½ of current dosages and increase in yields by 10%. For Smart Micronutrients dosage reduction of 90% is achieved and yields increase by 15-20%. The farmer pays less per acre but gets more yield than with the current fertilizers - farmers’ income will increase by 15-20%. Government can save hugely on phosphate imports. In combination with an environment-friendly nature, the Smart Phosphate and Micronutrients provides a win-win situation for all-farmers, Governments and environment.
