Post harvest all Fresh Produce consume Oxygen to oxidate the sugars or carbohydrates in them. The way to reduce the Oxidation is to store it in refrigerated conditions. The disadvantage of refrigeration is that while lower temperature brings down the rate of respiration, but the moisture lost during transpiration is lost forever and the produce looses its weight and shrivels. In order to control the transpiration losses and also to bring down the rate of respiration naturally, laser micro perforation is done on Biodegradable plastics, to slow down respiration rate and also reduce transpiration losses. It has done wonders for Pomegranate exports from India to Europe and several such success stories across the world is available for extending shelf life of fresh produce. Several Indian products are successful and since this is a green initiative need government support to extend to many such products across the nations ensuring that the farmers income could be increased substantially.
