HARIYO MAKHA - SIKKIM AGAINST AIR POLLUTION
"HARNESSING POLLUTION" FOR INNOVATIVE SOLUTION
I am a school teacher working in a small village called Makha in the east of Sikkim. I have been teaching and motivating students to work for Mother Nature. I have founded a very small initiative “HARIYO MAKHA” in 2015 for supporting Mother Nature.
I have been experimenting on newer and innovative ideas on “harnessing pollution” for earning small revenues which is then used for helping needy students in their education.
Some of our achievements are as follows:
1. We collected more than 50,000 scrap plastic covers and reused it for covering more than 3000 books and copies. Some revenue was earned out of the work. With it we helped one of our ex-student BIR BAHADUR RAI for getting admissions to BA (Pol Sc Hons) under IGNOU in 2017.
2. We collected and segregated around 1,70,000 pages for reuse. Around 10-15% were clean and were used to make Rough Copies that were then sold. Some revenue was earned. With it we helped another student DEVI SARAN CHETTRI who had dropped out of our school in 2017 due to financial reasons. We re-admitted him in Class 12 under NIOS.
We are all set to work hard again to sponsor at least 2 female students this time.
Upto now we are able to create two success stories.
