In most of the arid and semi arid places in India, farmers are not hiving sufficient water for agriculture. So farmers in these areas are able to produce only one or two crops a year if the weather is helpful. Sustainable water resources are depleting day by day ever increasing the problem. The huge projects are very expensive and still depend on rains to store surplus water and supply it when required, this is also changing the natural course of water flow and causing environmental damages. In-order to provide sufficient quantity water the irrigation huge irrigation projects & lift Irrigation projects are constructed across the rivers to divert the water into farmers fields. This highly expensive and requires a lot of land to be submerged under these huge reservoirs this is also reducing the flow of water in the rivers, Changing the natural course of water bodies is causing environmental damage. Still these huge projects also depend on rains to store surplus water and supply it when required. Now a day’s government is also providing heavy subsidies for farmers in India to adopt drip irrigation, sprinkler irrigation etc. With this we could reduce the water wastage but transpiration and evaporation losses could not be avoided and still crops are susceptible to weather conditions.
The major loss of irrigation water in agriculture is due to evaporation, transpiration and percolation. Actual water present in the plant in about 50% to 60% of the plant weight. The most valuable water used by the plants for growth is lost into atmosphere in the vapor form by evaporation & transpiration for producing energy and to reduce the core temperature of the plant. If we could avoid these losses there will be a zero water wastage and could use the same water again and again for irrigation. We will have the reliable water supply for irrigation within a small area of land.
