The Problem: Menstrual or sanitary waste is one of the biggest issue waste management industry or the government is facing right now. With no way to recycle, the sanitary napkins lie in the landfills or are flown away through the river producing infections for 400-500 years. These used pads are also seen choking the drainage pipes, where they are forced to be removed manually. The waste pickers that handle the sanitary waste from households, often complain of infections and diseases. Moreover, it is beyond human dignity to handle such kind of waste.
The Solution (Dahini): To overcome the above mentioned problems, we have come up with a compact destroyer of the size of a letterbox that can be installed at any household/institutional toilet. We urge ladies to put their used sanitary pads into Dahini(our innovation) and simply push a start button. The napkin would be destroyed in a 15 minutes of cycle. We have used a 500 Watt heater than runs for only 4 minutes per cycle resulting into an extremely cheap electrical consumption. The cost to burn one napkin in Dahini is just Rs.0.04 as against the cost of Rs.5 paid by the Pune Municipal Corporation against each sanitary pad.
With our machine getting installed into every public or private washrooms, we can ensure optimum sanitary hygiene for the ground level workers and waste pickers and ultimately to the society.
There are already some destroyers available in the market, but they are ranging as high as Rs.15,000 to Rs.1,00,000. Any normal household would not afford it. Thus to make the solution for sanitary waste practical and feasible, we have developed our machine and would be open for sales at the price of only Rs.5000. The innovation is of Mr. Ravindra Gadre who pioneers in the field of engineering and innovation since the last 35 years.
Dahini is currently moving from the phase of prototype to actual implementation into the market. Even before the product is out for sales, we have received an overwhelming response from the society and our target audiences.
We have also written a research paper on the menstrual waste and how our decentralized and economical solution(Dahini) can overcome the difficulties caused by sanitary waste. The research paper has been selected by the European Center of Sustainable Development in Rome, Italy; where we have been invited to present our research paper and showcase our product.
