SMART ENERGY METERS
The first system is \"Basic system\". Second system has been named as \"Enhanced system\" and the third ultimate system has been named as \"Further Enhanced system\"
The claims of the patent (225783) cater to all the three type of systems named above; however, the technology and working of the three systems is different from each other.
Protection is done at all the three type of places in a distribution system:
· Subscriber feeder;
· Point of Common Coupling (PCC);
· Main feeder between two PCCs.
Protects radial feeder as well as ring feeder. Protects single phase feeder, 3 phase feeder or a combination thereof. The hardware units for each type of feeder are different.
Each system requires one low rating (mA) additional signal wire traversing along with feeder wires.One signal wire per set of three phase or single phase feeder. Dis-connection of signal wire will de-energize the concerned and tail feeders.Each system requires a modification in energy meter (single phase or three phase). One unit to be installed at the end of every single phase or three phase feeder reaching PCC
Basic system: Low cost, analog system, detects and prevents power theft/ fault immediately.De-energizes power line on which theft or fault (L-G, LL-G, LLL-G, L-L, L-L-L) or any accident due to line takes place. Automatically restores power immediately when theft/fault/accident is removed. Extremely fast system,reduces distribution losses to NIL.Very effective on subscriber individual feeder.

Enhanced system: Requires one wireless communication connection per distribution transformer besides enhancement in ordinary energy meter and placing of one unit at each end of each part of feeder.
Features: Digital system, detects and reports amount and place of power theft to utility, communicates amount and place of power theft to higher officials in hierarchy as well stores the information in a database. Has load balancing and management capabilities, reports amount of load drawn as well as its power quality to utility. Very effective on main feeder. Has capability to:
(a) energize/ de-energize any feeder under its control,
(b) remote control of street lights without any additional feeder,
(c) recording of events in computer database in the utility substation,
(d) monitor and control loading of transformers,
(e) multi-tariff billing of consumer loads energy consumption,
(f) monitoring power flow from neighbouring utility,
(g) monitor power, energy drawn by subscriber at any instant
(h) feeder maintenance, load balancing and management, capacitor bank energization capabilities,
(i) deliver bill, account information, power quality of load, energy consumed, load energy profile to subscriber in electronic form, two way communication with Subscriber (Smart Meter)
Further Enhanced system: Combination of Basic and Enhanced system to deliver best capabilities of both.
Requirements: Same as that of Enhanced system with advanced units having capability to provide features of both Basic and Enhanced system.
Features: Detects and prevents theft on subscriber feeder & faults on any of the three points using Basic system. Provides all the features of Enhanced system.
