Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals

Department of Chemicals & Petro-Chemicals is part of the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers. The Department is entrusted with the responsibility of policy, planning, development and regulation of Chemicals and Petrochemicals Industries.  By participating in Smart India Hackathon 2017, they seek digital solutions to 3 issues faced by them.

Chemicals by their very nature  have toxicity/safety aspects.  Besides, there are large number of dual use chemicals.  The same, coupled with fast pace of technological innovations, calls for regular skill development/upgradation.  But, there are challenges in mobilization of youth for skill training and in job placement of skilled manpower, particularly in view of low payment by private industries.  Non-availability of database of trained persons limits role of training provider in improving placements and facilitating better job opportunities and salary, etc.

Driven by recent advances in bio materials and nanotechnology, multi-functional materials are emerging as a new interdisciplinary field that promises to provide a new level of functionality, adaptability for future engineered systems in plastics.  There is a need to identify such new areas map the knowledge available in this sector.
